How to measure your Security Screen Single Door

Browse Security Screen Single Door gallery →

A single security door takes about ten minutes to measure correctly. You only need a tape measure and a short ladder. The numbers below are what we need to build a door that fits your opening exactly — final measurements are confirmed on site before fabrication begins.

What you need

Tape measure, Short ladder.

Step 1 Decide which way the door should swing

Stand outside facing the opening and decide whether the handle is more comfortable on your left or your right. We build single doors as either a left-hand or a right-hand swing, and once it is built, the swing cannot be reversed.

Step 2 Measure your structural opening

Most single openings are a 3×7 (about 36" wide × 80" tall) or a 3×8 (about 36" wide × 96" tall). Measure your width and height in inches and write both down. We finish the door at about 35½" wide overall so it sits inside the opening with a clean ¼" of clearance on each side.

Step 3 Measure the height from the threshold to the top notch

Run the tape from the threshold (the floor of the opening) to the top notch on the wood trim. For a 3×7 opening that is 80". For a 3×8 opening that is 96".

Step 4 Note your existing knob and deadbolt centers

From the top notch downward, measure to the center of your existing knob and deadbolt. Standard centers are 41" for a 3×7 and 57" for a 3×8. If your numbers are different, that is fine — write down what you actually have and we will match it.

Things to watch for

  • No threshold? That is fine. We will plan a flat-bar transition so the door closes flush.
  • Standard threshold? Also fine. The door is built around the existing height.
  • Knob sticking past the trim? A lower-profile knob may be needed so the new door clears it.
  • Stucco flares at the bottom of the wall? Note this so the frame is built to sit flush.

What to send us

Width, height, swing direction, and a couple of phone photos of the opening (one head-on and one of the threshold). That is enough for a written quote.
