A security slider is built to mount over your existing patio slider opening, so the most important part of measuring is making sure your floor is level and noting anything in the way. Allow about ½" on each side and 1½" of ground clearance and you are in great shape. Final measurements are confirmed on site before fabrication begins.
Tape measure, Short ladder.
Measure the width and height of your existing slider opening in inches. The security slider is built ½" wider on each side and 1" taller above the opening so it covers the existing frame fully. Allow 1½" of ground clearance at the bottom for the track and floor variation.
Measure the height at both ends and in the middle of the opening. If your floor is not level, write down the difference so we can adjust the frame to match — that is what allows the door to slide smoothly without binding.
Look up at the header above the opening — if the door would hit anything when open, the security slider is built shorter and a header is added so it slides freely. Walk around the opening and note any pavers, stucco flare, planters, or anything else within a foot of the frame.
We anchor the slider with five fixing points around the frame and slip plates at the floor. If you can see the existing frame and floor where those anchors will land, take a photo of each so we can pre-plan the install.

Width, height, ground clearance, the floor-level differences, and phone photos of both ends of the opening.
