This guide is for measuring an existing window for an Olson Iron security screen. All numbers below are taken from our installer measurement sheet. Final measurements are confirmed on site before fabrication begins.
Mounting type
- Decide whether the screen will be flush-mounted to the wall, mounted over the trim, mounted on a pop-out, or fitted with standouts.
- If the window trim or window protrudes outward, you'll need standouts — measure how far the window protrudes and record the standout depth.
- If the window is on a pop-out, take measurements centered on the pop-out and note that longer fixing bolts will be needed.
Bedroom firebreak rule
- If a security screen window is being installed on a bedroom window and that window is the only emergency exit, it must be fitted with a fire quick-release lever so the customer can get out if other exits are blocked.
- Explain and demonstrate the firebreak lever to the customer.
- Account for the firebreak lever location on the inside — give the lever side at least 2" past the corner on the inside of the window, and add 5" to the overall width on the outside.
Inside check
- Note the direction the window slides and confirm the inside handle isn't obstructed by trim, blinds or furniture.
Sizes
- Record height and width. If standouts are required, record the standout sizes. Record on the contract whether the window is being fitted on a pop-out so the installers bring longer fixing bolts.
